What is syphilis?
Syphilis can be defined as a sexually transmitted disease
(STD) caused by an organism called Treponema Pallidum. It is a highly
infectious disease and can infect through the female and male sex organs and
anal sex (common among gays), penis of a man and through oral sex . People who
have Syphilis do not have symptoms not until the disease has reached it
advanced stage. However, syphilis was once a dangerous and very common disease
in the mid-1900s not until the development of medicine and the disease
plummeted over a period of time.
What causes syphilis mostly is if a person uninfected have sexual intercourse with an infected person, long kiss or body contact with an infected person, anal sex and oral sex. Syphilis may not be passed from mother to child.
Stages of syphilis
1.
Primary stage: they are sore like wounds
on the genital or mouth area of the infected person which occur between 10-90
days of infection. These sores are also ulcer like formation. In this case, the
disease is highly infectious and any form of contact with an infected person is
so sure that infection will occur. However, the sore or ulcer will go away by
itself without any form of treatment. If treatment is not administered during
this stage, the disease will advance to the second stage.
2.
Secondary Stage of syphilis infection:
this infection develops after 6-7weeks to within 6 months after being exposed
to the primary infection. Infection here does not only show ulceration or sores
on the mouth and genitals, but can also show up on some other parts of the
body, such as rashes on the palms and soles of feet, warts that could look like
genital warts, fever, swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite and eventual weight
loss. However,
Secondary syphilis will go on its own without
treatment. This would give a feeling that such person has a very strong immune
system, but whereas, the disease is getting much more dangerous and getting to
its advanced stage in which it can be more fatal and eventually cause other dangerous
diseases and death.
The periods in which the infection or
disease is dormant is known as the latent stage or latent syphilis.
3.
Tertiary Stage of syphilis infection: here, the
disease has left its dormancy and less contagious and with heavy damages to the
body will occur. It is also called a systematic stage because the disease will
or can cause different problems which can give way to some certain dangerous
common diseases like heart
Disease, stroke,
brain disease(like Alzheimer’s
disease), deafness, dementia, paralysis and eventually death.
