Urinary Tract Infection
Before I start discussing about Urinary Tract infection, let
me give a brief explanation about what Urinary Tract is about.
The Urinary tract is the organ that is in charge of
discharging waste products in form of urine out of the body system (through the
penis).
The Urinary Tract Consist of the Kidney, the Ureters, the
Bladder and the Urethra.
The Kidney:
These consist of 2 bean like shaped organs. They look in
sizes just like the fist of a man. They are basically in charge of filtering the blood off
impurities, nitrogenous waste products(urea) and therefor passes them down as
urine.
The ureters:
These are after the two kidneys. They are like tubes that
connect the kidneys to the bladder. Their main primary function is to carry the
filtered impurities or nitrogenous waste products to the bladder.
The Bladder:
This is a sack like shaped organ in the lower part of the
body. It is is mostly above the male organ or female organ. It mostly collects
the waste products fro the kidney and store it up for later dispensing.
The Urethra:
This is like a pipe that carries out the urine or waste
products out from the bladder.
These are the four parts in the body that form the Urinary
Tract.
Now, what is Urinary Tract Infection?
Urinary tract infection is when the urinary Tract system
(kidney, ureters, bladder, urethra) has been affected by bacteria, fungi or
virus. The name of the most common bacteria that affects the urinary system in
commonly known as the Escherichia Coli bacteria (E-coli). Other forms of
bacteria and fungus can affect the Urinary Tract System.
Urinary Tract infection is much common in women than in men
all because, the women urinary tract is shorter than in men.
A person can be infected of urinary tract infection due to
sexual activities and family history.
Most diagnoses of Urinary Tract infection are carried out in the laboratory. This could be:
- - Urine culture: urine culture is when a laboratory analyst, (that’s what we call them here in Nigeria) collects your urine and cultures them. If any bacteria are found, the analyst begins to try different anti bacteria that would fight such bacteria. This can take 24 hours or more.
- - Urinalysis: this is when your urine is collected in a cylindrical shaped container. Here, the laboratory analyst will tell you to urinate into the container. He would ask for the last part of your urine. In this case, it takes nothing less than 20 minutes before the result is out. Most urinalysis is done to ascertain the level of bacteria. Also to know the presence of blood in the urine, level of PH, level of acid.
Types
There are two types of urinary tract infection:
1.
Lower
Urinary Tract infection: this is when the bladder and the urethra are
affected by bacteria, fungus or virus.
The symptoms include:
- - foul smell of the urine,
- - The urine is cloudy or reddish.
- - You feel some little pain (not severe) in your bladder.
- - You have frequent urge to urinate
- - Your urine doesn’t pass out properly when you urinate. Mostly in the morning, it is kind of slow.
- - Pain at the lower back
2.
Upper urinary Tract Infection: this is due to none or inadequate
treatment of lower urinary tract. In most cases, bacteria travel up from the
lower part to the upper part. Mainly, the kidney and the ureters. Note that when
the upper urinary tract system is affected, and is not treated adequately or
promptly, this can lead to more severe cases of urinary tract infection.
Symptoms include those symptoms seen in the lower urinary tract and the followings:
- - Fever and night sweats: you begin to feel fever which most especially start in the night and last till the following morning. The fever mostly subsides before 12 pm.
- - Weight loss
- - Loss of appetite
- - Dizziness
- - Feel pains at your middle back
- - Sometimes, Muscle spasm, especially at the middle back also
- - Tiredness
- - Stooling in some cases.
- - Insomnia
- - Head ache
Urinary Tract infection is a common disease and could be
severe if it is not treated promptly. All the symptoms mention above may also
be signs of other forms of diseases. But make sure you see your family doctor
so that he can thoroughly diagnose what your problem is and administer the best
treatment for you.

1. Cranberry berry juice and Urinary Tract Infection:
-
Scientists
have made us to understand that cranberry juice is one of the remedies for treating urinary
tract infection. When we ingest cranberry juice, it is not all digested, but
most of it is passed down to the urinary tract, which in most cases fight the
bacteria(E-coli) affecting the urinary tract. A good urinary tract infection natural treatment.
This
discovery was made when they discovered that in petri dishes, cranberry
metabolites in juice prevented E-coli from sticking with other bacteria, which
limits its ability to grow and multiply.
-
Other
finding is that, the cranberry will make the bladder wall to be slippery and
bacteria will not be able to stick on the wall thereby, making them to easily
