The lung is a complex and largest organ in the body which is enclosed in the rib cage and charged with the filtering of air in and out of the body. Our body needs oxygen to function properly, and this used up oxygen is come out in form of carbon dioxide from our nostril.

What is lung cancer?
Lung cancer or cancer of the lung can be defined as a conditions in which the cells making up the lungs begins to multiply abnormally which eventually form a mass in the lungs which is called tumour. Cells are the simple unit of life, in other words, they make up every part of our body and they multiply through division. The tumorous result due to the abnormal division of these cells in the lungs what is known has cancer of the lungs. These cells are also called cancerous cells.

Lung cancer is invasive or said to be malignant in nature. In other words, it means that, it can spread to other organs and tissues in the body system through lymphatic system or the blood stream.
The most common form of cancer is known as Bronchogenic carcinomas because, the cancer cells arises from the bronchi and bronchioles, which are the cells lining the larger and smaller airways. The other form is very rare and it arises from the pleura or other tissues in the lung like the blood vessels.

In the USA alone,  it is estimated that 1 in 14 male and female will develop lung cancer in their life time.
Lung cancer affects the elderly more than the younger. Over 69% of people aged 65 and above are diagnosed with lung cancer, while those with 65 years and below have rare cases of lung cancer.

Types of lung cancer:
Lung cancer can be categorized into 2 different types.
  • 1.       Small cell lung cancer: SCLC; which accounts for almost 20 per cent of lung cancer that affect the lung and it is the most dangerous and it spreads quickly. The disadvantage of SCLC is that, the disease would become major in the body before symptoms starts to show up. At this point, treatment options may be minimal and death of such person may be imminent.
  • 2.       Non- Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): this type of cancer, which is the most common and it accounts for about 80 per cent of lung cancer cases. This cancer type is categorized into some other types which are:
-          Adenocarcinomas (accounts for about 50 per cent of NSCLC cases),
-          Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma (arises from the wall around the alveolar),
-          Squamous cell Carcinomas (accounts for about 30 per cent of NSCLC cases)
-          Large cells carcinomas (they are not so common as the previous ones mentioned)
  • 3.       Bronchial Carcinomas: this type of cancer is not related to cigarettes smoking and affects people mostly below the age of 40 but it is mostly rare.

Causes and risk factors of lung cancer:
-          Smoking: smoking weed, crack, tobacco or anything smoke getting into your lungs on daily basis will increase your chances of having lung cancer. Smokes are one of the things that increase free radicals in our body system. Free radicals are number one causes of cancer and other diseases. Free radicals reduce the strength of the immune system.
-          Passive smokers:  these are categories of people who are non-smokers but because of the environment they live in with smokers, they are likely more to have lung cancer especially if they are more heavily exposed.
-          Personal history:  a person who was diagnosed and treated of lung cancer have a high rate of having the disease again. Here, for this not to occur, you must go periodic routine check-up with your doctor and take aloe vera gel regularly. Read more below about aloe vera and lung cancer.
-          Family history: lung cancer is more common with people who have family members or relatives who have previously been diagnosed, treated or died of lung cancer.
-          Air pollution: in these days, the air is filled with pollutants such as smokes from vehicles which are called carbon monoxide, industrial fumes, dusts and so much more. These dangerous pollutants, when they get into the lungs, cell division may take place abnormally thereby causing tumour.
-          Radon gas:  this is the type of gas found in the earth crust which is the breakdown of radioactive radium, the decay product of uranium.  If this radioactive decay product gets into the cells in the lungs, it ionizes them which cause mutation of cells and could mutate abnormally in most cases.

Signs and symptoms of lung cancer:
Although, when cancer first affects the lungs, there are no symptoms until it is getting to its advanced stage(s). Most people who think they are exposed or at risk do usually go for periodic check-up which is carried out by the doctor with the use of an X-ray machine, CT scan, or some other ways of checking lung cancer,  to determine if there is any tumor growth.
But the following are common symptoms:
-          Heavy and uncomfortable cough
-          Obvious blood in sputum and when condition becomes more critical, the blood may increase significantly.
-          Chest pain which sometimes could get severe and feel of pull within the chest
-          Uneasiness in breathing
-          Pains in the shoulder areas
-          Difficulty swallowing
-          Headache
-          Seizure
-          Blurry vision
-          Weight loss
-          Fatigue and weakness
-          Depression and mood swing

Stages of breast cancer that must be known before treatment
Before any kind of treatment can be done for a patient with lung cancer, its stage must be ascertained; meaning, its extent of damage must be known or how it has spread.

This includes, evaluating the size of the cancer and how it has penetrated its surrounding tissues. This is to let the doctor know how a tumorous cancer cell should be treated.  For example, NSCLC is stages 1 to 4.

Stage 1 of NSCLC means that the cancer is only within the lungs and it is not yet invasive. Stage two and three is when the tumours are now larger and is becoming highly invasive. Stage 4, this is when the cancer cells have invaded other parts of the body through the lymphatic system and through the blood stream.

Also SCLC is categorized into two stages: First stage is the Limited-stage, meaning the cancer cell is still within the lung area and has not infected surrounding tissues. The second stage is the Extensive stage: this, the cancer has spread to other part of the body outside or outside the lungs.
When lung cancer has become invasive and affects the surrounding tissue and organs, it becomes more dangerous. Mostly, it could affect the brain, liver, stomach, kidney and bone.

How is lung cancer diagnosed?
Lung cancer can be diagnosed by doctor in so many ways such as the use of:
-          Chest X ray
-          CT-Scan
-          Through a person’s History and physical extermination,
-          MRI
-          PET
-          Sputum Analysis or cytology
-           Bone Scan
-          Bronchoscopy
-          Needle biopsy
-          Some Major Surgical procedures
-          Thoracentesis
-           Blood test
-          Please, doctors can add more to the comment option below
Your doctor will be in the best of position to determine the kind of diagnoses that he would use.

Treatment for lung cancer:
Treatment options for lung cancer include the following:
-          Surgery
-          Radiation
-          Chemotherapy
-          Prophylactic brain radiation
-          Treatment of recurrence
-          Targeted therapy
-          Photodynamic therapy
-          Radio frequency ablation
-          Experimental therapies
These treatment options are mainly used and done by the doctor, but after confirmation that the cancer has reached a certain stage or level. For example, a surgery may be needed if the cancer cells have not become too invasive and they are manageable or the tumor is still at its young stage and can be easily removed from the affected area. Stage 1 and 2 or limited-stage, surgery may be carried out by the surgeon. So therefore, it is very important for your doctor to know the stages discussed before treatment options are rolled out.

Simple ways to prevent lung cancer:
In most of my previous articles, I have briefly discussed how free radicals get into the body and how damaging they can become. Free radicals get into the body through smoking, use of alcohol etc. free radicals are in fact, almost the causes of all diseases and conditions that affects us. And in most cases, we are careless and with a care free attitude (even if aware at risk) to our health, not until things are getting worse that we begin to take actions.

Prevention is better than cure, and that has been most of my quotes, because health is wealth. Simple things which we could have prevented get us hooked down on the long run to the sick bed and we spend more than we bargained for.
The simple ways to prevent lung cancer include:
-          Quit smoking:
-          If you have a family history, go for routine check and start preventive measure, with the use of aloe vera.
-          If you have friends who smoke heavily, stay away from them or tell them to stop smoking whenever you are around
-          If you have been treated before, go for periodic check-up with your doctor.

Aloe Vera and lung cancer
-          Recent researches has made us to understand that aloe vera constant uses prolongs the life of cancer patients and also help to strengthen the immune system, by which, the immune system fights the cancer cells itself. Studies made us to understand that; aloe vera makes the immune system active by activating white blood cells that consume free radicals and releases anti-cancer substances such as interferon and interleukin.

-          Also, according to research, aloe vera uses has been shown to reduce the stress, severe side effects and discomfort associated with some lung cancer treatments. For example, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, seriously, does have adverse effects on its patients and some do find it so discomforting that they find it hard to continue the treatment options. Aloe vera has been known to reduce such discomfort and let the body absorb the treatment options provided.

-          Because of the quick aging which is common with people undergoing lung cancer or any form of cancer treatment options, aloe vera use is good. I have seen a woman, who was diagnosed of a form of cancer, and she started aging quickly, she looked 60 when she was in fact 45 years old. She started the use of aloe vera and she became younger and her skin rejuvenates, and dead skin cells to make the skin stay younger and look more radiant. The fact is that, aloe vera has anti-aging properties and is able to rejuvenate the body back by inducing the creation of more fibroblast cells under the skin.

Who is this aloe vera meant for?

-          If you are suffering from lung cancer and want to improve their condition naturally with the use of other medical treatment options like chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc.
