Colon Cancer (Colorectal cancer)
What is Colon cancer?
Colon cancer can be defined as the cancer than affects the large intestine, which is also known as the colon. This cancer can also affect the end of the colon which is the rectum. When the rectum is also affected, it is known as rectal cancer. The dual cancerous growth in the two places is known as colorectal cancer.
The colon is part of the digestive system which helps to store up waste materials for excretion, and while the rectum is the tip end of the colon which is not too far from the anus.
Cancer formation in the colon and rectum are caused by abnormal cell divisions in the large intestine and which could be benign in nature (also sometimes called polyps). Benign cancer means that the cancer cells are not invasive or will only affect that particular area without spreading to other parts of the body. Benign cancer of the intestine are easily treatable through surgery and are not life threatening.
Whereas, if the cancer is malignant, that means it is invasive and can affect other surrounding tissues and cells and other parts of the body and cause lot more damages and life threatening symptoms, which cannot be easily cured.
In the US, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer in male and fourth in female.
In men, death from colon cancer ranks third after lung cancer and prostate cancer, and third after lung and breast cancer in women.

Causes of colon cancer:
Colon cancer causes are mainly causes by genetics, improper diets, constant ulceration of the intestine, and continuous presence of polyps in the walls of the large intestine.
i.                     Improper diets can really cause colon cancer: diets high in fats, alcohol, carbonated drinks, long term improper balanced diets and diets not rich in protein, fibre and vegetables can increase the causes of colon cancer. Just imagine you fuel your car which is usually on petrol with kerosene, how do you think your car engine will respond; later after, it will breakdown. This is just as the same example if we feed our stomach with improper diets and this could lead to cancer over time.
ii.                   Polyps in intestine: large intestinal polyps which are benign in nature if not treated or removed promptly can develop into colon cancer. So it is best to remove these polyps through surgery to prevent this colon cancer from becoming malignant.
iii.                  Constant ulceration of the intestine: can cause colorectal cancer
iv.                 Family history, genetics: a person who have family history of colon cancer have a chance of having the cancer but this may not be a 100 per cent factor in determining colon cancer disease in such person. It is well known that over 70 per cent of those diagnosed with colon cancer were not associated with having previous family who has had the disease before.
v.                   MYP Polyposis syndrome: this is a newly discovered hereditary colon cancer. People who have this may have between 10-100 polyps around the age of 40 years, and this will make them to be at high risk of having colon cancer.
vi.                 Previous cancer histories like breast cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer

Risk factors of colon cancer:
i.                     Improper diet
ii.                   Obesity
iii.                  Smoking and excessive use of alcohol
iv.                 Use of anti-inflammatory drugs
v.                   Estrogen replacement therapies

Symptoms of colon cancer:
Colon cancer is asymptomatic, meaning symptoms may not show up over a period of time not until the cancer has become more invasive and causing much damage to the intestine. However, colon cancer symptoms may be synonymous with other symptoms of diseases and conditions that affect the intestine as a whole, such as irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, peptic ulcer, Crohn disease. Diagnosis by your doctor will ensure that you have colon cancer or other diseases or conditions. But the following nob-specific symptoms are largely associated with colon cancer:
i.                     Weakness and fatigue
ii.                   Shortness of breath
iii.                  Stools that are watery
iv.                 Diarrhea
v.                   Weight loss
vi.                 Lower abdominal pain or sometimes could be all around the abdomen
vii.                Constipation
viii.              May notice blood in stool
ix.                 Persistent bloating
x.                   Feel of intestinal cramps.
Visit your doctor. Only diagnosis can for sure tell that you may be having colon cancer.
